PROJECT AFRICA is delighted to offer our 'Buying & Selling Gems Program'. It has been designed specifically for those engaged in the buying and selling of gemstones. Acquire valuable knowledge and skills that will help you buy and sell with confidence.

The program consists of four levels:

LEVEL ONE - Introduction to Gemmology (No Prerequisite)

Theory (Online)

Level One covers the chemical nature of gemstones, their physical and optical properties, basic crystallography, the absorption of light, the spectroscope, refraction, reflection and the refractometer, polarized light, the polariscope, pleochroism, the dichroscope, colour filters, specific gravity, luminescence, magnification, and thermal conductivity.

Practical

Consisting of 30 hours of practical instruction, students will learn how to use the various gem testing instruments needed to identify gemstones.

In Class: June 24th to June 28th, 2024

Course Fee: 60,000 ETB + VAT

LEVEL TWO - Gem Identification (Level One Prerequisite)

Theory (Online)

Level Two covers the ten colour groupings (colourless or white, red, pink, orange, yellow, blue, green, violet, or purple, brown, black, or grey) plus phenomenal and unusual gemstones.

Practical

Consisting of 30 hours of practical instruction, students will learn how to identify gemstones by colour and transparency.

In Class: July 22nd to July 26th, 2024

Course Fee: 60,000 ETB + VAT

LEVEL THREE - Advanced Gemmology (Level Two Prerequisite)

Theory (Online)

Level Three covers imitation, assembled and lab-created gemstones, the methods used to manufacture lab-created gemstones including Verneuil, Czochralski, flux melt, hydrothermal, skull crucible, zone melt, horizontally oriented crystallization, sublimation method, and modified Stober method, their unique identifying features, treatments and enhancements including heat treatment, surface and sub-surface diffusion, lead glass fracture filling, flux assisted partial fissure healing, glass fracture filling, cobalt doped glass filled sapphires, high heat & pressure (HT+P), quench-crackling, surface modifications, coatings and foil backs, and irradiation.

Practical

Consisting of 30 hours of practical instruction, students will learn how to identify imitation, lab-created and treated gemstones.

In Class: August 19th to August 23rd, 2024

Course Fee: 60,000 ETB + VAT

LEVEL FOUR - Coloured Gemstone Grading (No Prerequisite)

Theory (Online)

Level Four covers the grading of coloured gemstones using four popular coloured gemstone grading systems (GemDialogue, World of Color, GIA GemSet, ColourWise) and how to grade opals, jadeite, and pearls. You will also learn how to value gems based on the international markets.

Practical

Consisting of 30 hours of practical instruction, students will learn how to grade gemstones using a variety of coloured gemstone grading systems.

In Class: September 16th to September 20th, 2024

Course Fee: 60,000 ETB + VAT

TESTS AND EXAMINATIONS

This program includes five online tests, and the identification of twelve coloured gemstones.

UPON COMPLETION

Upon the successful completion of this program, graduates will receive the Buying & Selling Gems Certificate and credits towards both the Career Gemmologist and Coloured Gemstone Professional Diploma Programs.
